The volume, published on the occasion of the exhibition Maria Lai. L’anno zero at the Museo Novecento in Florence, pays tribute, on the centenary of her birth, to this silent protagonist of contemporary art, focusing on one of the artist’s most cherished themes, the nativity’s image takes shape through artefacts created with ancient wisdom and poor materials (terracotta, stones, fabric, wood): small monuments to the desire for peace and brotherhood.

Maria Lai (Ulussai, 1919 – Cardedu, 2013) over the course of her long life, consistently dedicated herself to original research focussed on the delicate poetry of existence.
Experimenting with different languages and processes, from sculpure to drawing, writing and embroidery, she created works of intense lyricism where art is interwoven with history, myths and popular legends.
